Pasadena–Mishima 2019 Summer Youth Program

July 30 – August 6, 2019
Pasadena, California

The Pasadena – Mishima Summer Youth Program is happy to host Friendship 2019 to be held from July 30 to August 6 in Pasadena.  This program will bring together selected teens from the city of Mishima, Japan with youth from the Pasadena area to share an experience of a lifetime and to develop a better understanding between our two countries.  The program has seen each community visiting our respective cities on alternating years.  We would like to invite youth to participate as a representative of Pasadena in this exciting and significant program.

The program is the result of an invitation Bryan Takeda received through the Pasadena Sister Cities Committee in the summer of 2001 for several youth from the Pasadena area to participate in an International Summer Camp at Mt. Fuji, Japan.  Several teenagers and chaperones joined exchange students from Pasadena at the camp for a week of activities and relationship building.  During a special meeting between Mishima Mayor Koike and Bryan at the end of the program, the Mayor accepted an invitation to send 15 youth from Mishima, Japan beginning in the Summer of 2002.  Since that time our youth have visited each of our cities on alternating years for a week of field trips, activities and homestays.  Trips to Japan have included visits to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and more recently Tohoku and Fukushima.  This year’s schedule in Pasadena includes field trips to a Dodgers baseball game, Battleship USS Iowa, BBQ with students from Germany and Finland, Universal Studios, the California Science Center and the Space Shuttle Endeavor, the Japanese American National Museum, Griffith Observatory and Hollywood.

Applications are now being accepted.  For more information, please contact Bryan Takeda at affinity2000@earthlink.net or (626) 396-9927.
