Student Exchange Program

The student exchange program offers a special opportunity for students, ages 16 to 30, to participate in summer exchanges with our international sister cities. To qualify, students must be attending high schools or colleges in the areas served by the Pasadena Unified School District or they must be residents of that area. Students selected for the exchange program will be expected to participate in Pasadena Sister City activities and help to provide housing for visiting students the following summer.

Each of our sister cities provides accommodations with host families and visits to local attractions. The student pays for transportation (airfare) and miscellaneous personal expenses. For Mishima, student also pays for train fare from Narita Airport to Mishima. The term of exchange varies from three to six weeks; students may travel more after the exchange.

LUDWIGSHAFEN, GERMANY A city on the Rhine near Mannheim and Heidelberg College students preferred, however high school students welcomed Summer program, about four to six weeks, June to August You will work in a city department or a business. The Ludwigshafen Sister City Committee will do their best to match your work experience with your interests. German language desired

MISHIMA, JAPAN A city at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture College students preferred Summer program. Three weeks, from the last week in July through mid-August. Students assist part-time in English classes, Japanese language skills helpful, not required Even years Pasadena students go to Mishima; Odd years Mishima students come to Pasadena

JARVENPAA, FINLAND A suburb north of Helsinki, home of composer Sibelius High school or college students Summer program, three to five weeks from late June to August Cultural exchange, Finnish not required

VANADZOR, ARMENIA Third largest city in Armenia, two hours north of Yerevan High school or college students Summer program, from three to six weeks, late June to August Cultural exchange, Armenian language helpful

Your completed application must be emailed to: When your complete application has been received you will receive a confirmation. You will receive a notice regarding the required interview and the location and time for the interview. All students selected are expected to join Pasadena Sister Cities Committee. Student dues are $10.
